KRU axes Injera from 7s team

By Sports Editor Omondi Onyatta
The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has suspended winger Collins Injera from the national sevens team due to disciplinary reasons. The decision came in the aftermath of Injera’s suspension by his club, Mwamba RFC, alongside fellow club teammates Dennis Ombachi and Horace Otieno.
The trio, who were part of the squad that participated in the Wellington and Las Vegas IRB Series, failed to turn up for Mwamba’s semi final duel against Strathmore Leos, which they lost 18-15.
Injera, who studies at Daystar University, had reportedly sought an amicable solution with KRU regarding his club duties. The winger, widely regarded as one of the best in the world, is rumored to be in an internship program with one of the city-based companies. He has found it difficult to juggle the program with his rugby and studies.
Injera, the younger brother to former skipper Humphrey Kayange, will therefore miss the upcoming IRB tournaments in Hong Kong and Japan. The national sevens team, under the tutelage of Mike Friday, resumed training last week ahead of the two events. Kenya currently lies 6th in the IRB standings.
