Harambee Stars players were the subject of ridicule by a section of Nigerian media, which chided them for their black tracksuits. The team landed in Lagos on Wednesday afternoon to a dull reception by their hosts.
The local media had a field day expressing the alleged ‘thrashing’ that awaits the Kenya. “They have come in black attires expecting a black day against the Super Eagles,” they reported.
However, such mind games do not seem to distract the local boys who have vowed to beat the continental champions in their backyard. Coach Adel Amrouche expressed optimism that the team would come away with a positive result. “This team has enough potential to do well in Lagos,” the Belgian said.
Nigerians have been in bullish moods ever since the national team clinched the 2013 AFCON in South Africa. Earlier in February, an official from the Nigerian Football Federation stated that it was obvious Nigeria would beat Kenya as has been the norm. “When is the match? Am sure we can beat them anytime,” the official quipped.
Harambee Stars face a monumental task of making history by beating the Super Eagles in their backyard. Kenya has never won against the Nigerians at home and away. The World Cup qualifier match will be staged on Saturday at Calabar in Nigeria.
